Speaking Heart to Heart
I had a voicemail message from my dad on my cell phone, probably for years after he died, that I would listen to when I missed him. How I wish I still had that voicemail message. Or even better, that I had a recording of my dad telling me what he loved about me, what his hopes and dreams for me were, what life lessons he would have most wanted to teach me, how he would have felt about my children who had not yet been born.
In a parenting workshop, Barrett and I learned about the importance of bridging periods of separation for our children. After the workshop, I gave Fiona a heart-shaped stone that I told her held Mama’s love for her inside it. When I went to work, I would give her the heart and we’d put it in her box of special treasures so she could look at it and hold it if she missed me and remember how much I love her. The parents workshop focused on brief periods of separation, like going to work or school, but it seems to me that bridging separation also applies to the permanent separation of death.
That’s why we started offering Priceless Conversations in my practice. Each time I facilitate a Priceless Conversation with my clients, I am awed and amazed at how deeply we feel for our children and what a gift these courageous parents are leaving their families. I am convinced that estate planning should not be about just transferring assets, but about transferring these far more valuable intangible gifts.
