Parents' Protection Planning
| Imagine that you and your spouse finally have the luxury of a night out without the kids. You leave the kids with a babysitter and leave the babysitter a list of phone numbers to call in case of emergency. Now just for a moment imagine what would happen if you didn’t make it home that night. As awful as it is to think about, suppose you were in a car accident and the police, seeing your address on your driver’s license and your pictures of your kids in your wallet went to your house. Your babysitter would be upset and possibly confused. She and the police would try to reach the people on your emergency contact list. If you have family who live close by, imagine they are out of town or asleep and not picking up their phones. The police would try to find a relative to take care of the kids, but if they couldn’t find someone fairly quickly, because they have their own liability to consider and are required by law to look out for the best interests of the children, they might feel that they have no choice but to call in child protective services (“CPS”), which means that your kids could end up in foster care. As a mom myself, I know that this is the last thing we would want to have happen to our kids, even if it’s just for a short time. I have one client who was so concerned about this issue before working with me that she would not go out on a date in the same car with her husband if it was raining. |
